Submersible Feature

An attempt to capture the momentary nature of a soft urban water feature, and to instead cast its ornateness as a toxic plume. Implied in such a macro depiction is a conversant implication of a living organism and how a subject is literally larger than life size, while metaphorically being distant in its intended scale.

Orb, Nothing, Zero

Collation or spheric, circular and orbulus forms, in sequence, as an emblem for squaring the circle — a form of binary communication which highlights the role of OCR software, bringing into question the purpose of digital images and machine-readable, searchable, retrievable, and editable data.

Line Painters

Line painters apply surface markings to communicate information on roads for pedestrians and drivers. Non-mechanical line painters mark out a horizontal and vertical grid with rope dipped into a white chalk. Painted onto the road using a steel jug and a 'painting stick', a tool which has an angled gauzed end-point, is equivalent to a large piece of steel section and functions like the tip of a pen.

Pressed Flat

Statement sentence, repeated, analogous to the labour of language production, and aligned to the inherent association between the visual two dimensional space of the page, and the layered conjunction or leap to the physical world, and how the mind of a body reimagines where it finds itself.

Beginning of Forms

"A Small Measure" — a component universal single case typeface of core modular elements.*

*The 'Beginning of Forms' cypher relates to a text by the medieval scribe Robert Grosseteste, who maintains ''that light is the first corporeal form, that makes the first matter (without any form) expand in three dimensions. Light spreads carrying (informed) matter along with it, and multiplying infinitely it originates finite quantity, so structuring the universe, conceived as series of spheres.''

Series of found abstracted letter forms formed to spell out a sufi scripture citation.*

*Pareidolia is a psychological phenomena whereby an individual sees something in a stimulus that is otherwise vague or not even present. The process of an alphabetical version of pareidolia holds provenance in observing and documenting figures of the alphabet appearing in cracks of paving slabs and flag stones, as well as in relief shadows of tectonic architectural forms.
